In 2003, I wrote a TCP/IP server emulator in C++ for the World of Warcraft Friends & Family Alpha. With it, players who had no access to the official test servers could log in, create a character and explore the whole game world, seeing and chatting with each other.

Later, I joined a team of programmers working on the Stormcraft server. The server I wrote independently earned me the invite. While on the Stormcraft team, I worked on pathfinding. We held public tests that let hundreds of players in, nearly a year before the game launched. I remember saying during one of the tests, “this game is going to be a smash hit.”
